Emergency Prep for Seniors and Caregivers

Emergency planning for older adults requires more than food and flashlights. Seniors often rely on medications, mobility aids, and caregiver support—making their needs during blackouts or disasters especially critical.

In this guide, we’ll walk through key preparedness tips for seniors and caregivers alike to help reduce stress, avoid medical complications, and ensure peace of mind.

Key Tips for Senior Emergency Readiness:

  • Medication Management: Keep a list of all prescriptions with dosages, doctor info, and extras if possible. Use a labeled pill case and store in a waterproof container.
  • Mobility Aids: Have a backup cane, walker, or wheelchair ready and accessible. Include ramps or lifting gear if needed.
  • Go Bag with Essentials: Include hygiene items, backup glasses/hearing aids, ID, copies of medical records, and non-perishable foods.
  • Battery Backups: For CPAP machines, oxygen concentrators, or other medical devices, store charged battery backups or manual alternatives.
  • Caregiver Contact Plan: Seniors living alone should have a phone tree or check-in system. Caregivers should carry a printed contact sheet and extra keys.
  • Portable Documents: Make copies of Medicare cards, insurance info, and DNR orders (if applicable) in a secure folder or flash drive.
  • Label Everything: All items and bags should be clearly labeled with the senior’s name, address, allergies, and emergency contacts.
